Apostille
The legalisation convention is the convention abolishing the requirement of legalisation for foreign public documents, also known as the Apostille Convention (5 October 1961). This convention does not completely abolish legalisation but shortens the chain so that only a single action is required, the addition of an apostille. A document bearing an apostille does not require any further legalisation by the embassy or consulate of the country in which it is to be used.

The Hague Convention abolishing the requirement of legalization for foreign documents dated October 5, 1961 entered into force for the United
States on October 15, 1981. Documents originating in Germany need an “APOSTILLE” issued by the appropriate German authorities for
recognition in the United States. Documents legalized by “APOSTILLE” need no authentication by U.S. Consular officers.
Am 15. Oktober 1981 traten die Vereinigten Staaten dem Haager Abkommen bei, welches Beglaubigungen von Dokumenten durch konsularische
Vertretungen schon seit 1961 für hinfällig erklärt hatte. Alle Originalurkunden deutscher Herkunft müssen daher direkt an die zuständigen
deutschen Behören gesandt werden, um eine Legalisierung durch die APOSTILLE zu erhalten.
